Renovation of Auditorium BA 026. University of Duisburg

The Institute of Engineering at the University of Duisburg / Essen required a somewhat dilapidated lecture theatre in the BA building on Bismarckstraße to be completely renovated. In addition to technical / functional aspects such as modern accessibility, upgraded fire safety facilities and an enhancement of the room’s acoustics, the design specification also called for a better use of space in order to seat up to 529 people. RKW developed a fresh design and colour scheme which combines bright acoustic wooden panels and a grey rubber floor together with a seating area in vibrant reds. New balustrade elements were added to create a spatial outline for the new auditorium. The visual concept was transferred to the adjoining foyers, corridors and technical areas – enabling the lecture theatre to offer stimulating access to its surroundings. In the process, several existing elements such as old, original wing doors and a curved staircase were retained and refurbished.
