Multipurpose Hall MBS-Arena. Potsdam

A roof for record accomplishments: The Brandenburg Olympic Training Centre at Luftschiffhafen Potsdam is a sports area of cutting-edge infrastructure. As the seat for various national and regional training centres it provides ideal conditions for athletes and coaches. The latest addition is a gymnasium with three sports areas lined with stands to all four sides and built by RKW. The building is comprised of four building segments that accommodate 2,025 spectators during competitions and other events. A functional wing, immediately adjacent to it, was designed as a two-storey training hall for sports such as fencing and judo, inclusive of a weights room and wellness area for the judoka national squad. A further functional wing continues from the north façade of the existing neighbouring hall. It equally houses a single-field hall, supplemented by an equipment room and weights room for ball sports, plus rooms for physiotherapy and a cafeteria on the ground floor. Considering the many different uses, the façade creates a homogenous, attractive exterior by emphasising the main body with two horizontally-placed material tapes. The all-round brick façade of the ground floor is relaxed with the help of lavish windowed fields, while the top floor featuring a light exterior plastering presents itself almost as a monolithic structure.
