New life on urban wasteland: In the Stuttgart basin, the new “Europa” quarter was built over a former railway freight yard site covering an area of 15 hectares. The development is convenient to get around on foot, offers high-quality housing and has an outstanding choice of cultural facilities as well as the Milaneo at its heart – a shopping centre that actually confers identity and is home to about two hundred shops across three levels covering 43,000 square metres. In addition, the Milaneo hosts food and service areas, over 7,300 square metres of office space, a hotel with 156 rooms and 415 apartments. Residential use occurs in seventeen town houses at the mall which are grouped around three leafy courtyards. The result is a lively mixture encompassing different areas of life – and a MIPIM real estate award as “Best Futura Mega Project”.
