Menden retail centre. menden
Effective renovation of an old station site: RKW, working together with the Nordhorn-based project developer List + Wilbers, designed and realised a specialist retail centre consisting of six different components in Menden, Sauerland. As part of the construction works, a road was extended to allow full vehicular access to the elongated plot, which runs along the railway line. The buildings are arranged in series, one after the other. First in line is a two-storey new-build, erected along the approach to a bridge over the tracks, the second position is occupied by the newly extended historic railway station building. The ground floor of this building offers space for a restaurant, which also brings life to the forecourt. All the other buildings are about six metres high, single storey and contain various retail shops. Cantilevering canopies over each entrance help to identify the shops and can be clearly seen from a distance. The curtain wall facades consist of three continuous bands of variously sized vertical panels, each broken up by areas of colour. These colours correspond with the corporate colours of the resident companies and act as an orientation aid for visitors and customers.
