RKW Leipzig has designed and taken a new Konsum supermarket to completion in Bachviertel Leipzig, a “Gründerzeit” quarter from the late 1800s with mainly high-quality residential properties in historic and in new buildings. The single-storey new-build is a clear geometric cube. It is positioned on the edge of the footway and continues the line and flow of the adjacent buildings. The building has the main entrance diagonally at the intersection of two roads. Also on the front is a gateway to the delivery hall, which is located on the inside to avoid causing noise nuisance in the neighbourhood. In terms of aesthetics, the external envelope is made from large-format, light-grey glassfibrereinforced concrete panels of fair-faced quality, which are divided in some areas by a linear matrix pattern. The building takes up the traditional form of the surrounding buildings with a basement, cornice and attic. Building openings such as the entrance area, windows and doors appear “cut into” the fair-faced concrete cladding of the cube. These incisions are clad with dark-brown high-pressure laminate (HPL) panels with timber decoration or glass. The interior is designed to match with warm brown and beige cappuccino colours.
