IKEA Shopping centre. LÜBECK

More than a furniture store: still relatively thinly spread in Germany, the furniture retailer IKEA has built many of its "Home Park" centres in other countries. In these centres, the classic blue IKEA cube is augmented by other retailers. When a site in the north-east of Lübeck formerly belonging to Villeroy & Boch became free, RKW designed and realised one of these centres for the Swedish company.
The new centre is organised according to the popular dumbbell principle. A mall connects two highly attractive shopping venues. In this case, IKEA is one of these magnets and at the other end of the dumbbell is a large Edeka supermarket and a Saturn electrical store. The main entrances at the ends and a middle entrance are marked by large ellipses, which highlight an impressive 11 metre room height. Even the normal mall is unusually spacious at seven metres high. The mall is almost all single storey with just one two-storey part, only accessible from the interior. The result looks very much like a shopping street, on which 53 shops and service providers have set up.
The aesthetic underlying theme of the centre is the sea: isolated boulders, pebbles and driftwood on a beach – those are the associations evoked by a timber facade with round cut-outs in the roof and circular shapes in the floor coverings. As a whole, the centre creates an impression of playful lightness, a good match for the uncomplicated image of IKEA. The centre opened in March 2014.
