For the transformation of a large part of its urban centre, the town of Hanau was looking for the right investor and architects for the first time in a competitive nationwide dialogue which eventually took place over two years. The single tender envisioned not merely a shopping centre but also many other features such as a hotel, housing, a multiplex cinema as well as public streets and squares. Even after RKW had secured the contract, the dialogue with local citizens and stakeholders remained pivotal to the development process. This communicative effort was rewarded by a powerful degree of support and by the enthusiasm with which town residents, in particular, use and accept the new public spaces. The people of Hanau are once again proud of their town.
